F&M Global Barometers
White House Summit for Democracy
Merging information design and data visualization to create consumable documents that were shared on a global scale.
F&M Global Barometers consists of the F&M GBGR®, F&M GBTR™, and the F&M LGBTQI+ Perception Index. As an organization, they provide a database of sexual orientation and gender identity rights that is detailed, quantitative, and objective for over 204 countries and regions. They have been able to adapt their collected and peer-reviewed data into numerous purposes and digestible formats over the last 10+ years.
The Challenge
Faced with participation at the White House Summit for Democracy in 2021, F&M Global Barometers was looking for a way to demonstrate the measurement of legislative protections for the LGBTQI+ peoples. The complex data needed to be provided in a comparative, quantitative manner that could be consumed on a global stage.
Our Strategy
Our design team had to enact the core principles of information design to create a template that would appropriately lay out 30 individual item scores, grading scale, dimension score, and total grade. The report then needed to include content on methodology and show comparative data among other democracy indicators. This work needed to be swiftly created for the 111 participating countries.
The Results
F&M Global Barometers was able to distribute individual PDFs for each of the countries attending the White House Democracy Summit. The data visualization of this work allowed them to continue the conversation about the legislative protection status of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, and non-binary individuals. The Summit springboarded a new barometer, which launched in early 2023.
